How important is the association market to Sarawak?
Exceedingly important. In fact, association meetings make up a major portion of the business events held here. Over the past 12 years, associations around the globe have championed their cause in Sarawak due to our ability to swiftly meet their business needs along with an experience that is difficult to replicate anywhere else around the world.
Sarawak’s differentiating factor, and its attraction for association based meetings, lies in how we best utilise the nature of our destination. Second tier destinations are able to provide a customised experience for delegates, offering a fresh destination, great value and passionate sector partners who are driven to deliver, without a lag in world class meeting facilities, venues and hotels.
What was the response to the Redefining Global Tribes campaign in Antwerp?
Fantastic! It was very encouraging to be part of the Associations World Congress 2018 with over 400 associations executive. Our ‘tribe’ went on a mission to bridge business needs by showcasing what Sarawak can offer as well as the active pursuit of matching objectives. Sarawak widens its borders to welcome all association tribes, be they scientific, trade or philanthropic, to assemble under one powerful global tribe to create new realities not only for the state, but for their respective associations as well.
Are you looking to better the 47 conventions held in 2017 this year?
Most certainly. From the additional 89 business events we secured in 2017, we are beyond excited to welcome them to Sarawak shores which will be held state-wide from 2018 to 2022. Several high profile conferences happening this year include the 5th International Marine Conservation Congress, 17th Continuing Professional Development Series: Diabetes Asia Conference and the 10th Clean Air Asia Better Air Quality Conference.
As we speak, SCB is forming a collective comprising of key ministries from the Sarawak State Government to drive closer collaboration between local association bodies, their international counterparts and the Government. Known as the ‘Business Events Sarawak Alliance’, this degree of support shows the business events sector is recognised as a pivotal force in impacting the economic growth of the state, and provides the confidence for association event planners to bring their events here.
What sectors are you focusing on?
Sarawak has priorities in specific sectors in which there has been a significant amount of investment. For example, the agriculture sector and the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy which covers many industrial sectors. We are also seeing a lot of traction from the medical industry, public health, education and most recently, digital economy.
Sarawak Convention Bureau will also be leveraging our first ever Business Events Tribal Meet (TriBE) 2018. TriBE 2018 will not only showcase Sarawak’s ability for business events, but also equip clients with knowledge, tools and insights through our panel speaker of international thought leader and expert association bodies.
