I was at a dinner party recently and during the usual chit chat get to know you stuff I was asked what I do for a living. When I said I run a business events industry magazine I was met with blank faces.
If I had said I run a travel industry magazine, and I have done in the past, people get very excited.
So anyway, this led to me going on a rant about the business events industry and how important it is to the economy. I think I need one of those badges that customer service people wear; “ Ask me anything I am here to help”.
But as usual the dialogue about what I do for a living moved to things like “ where is your favourite place to travel too?”; “ Have you ever been to…?”; and my personal favourite “ I am thinking of booking a holiday where do you think I should go?”
Now I love a chat, so I am more than happy to talk about all things travel. But the next day I was mulling over the previous evening’s conversation and found myself getting frustrated and defensive.
For an industry that is this big and successful and contributes to the economy as much as it does why do so few know about it?
To be fair to the people I was talking with at the dinner, they were very happy to listen to my rant and seemed to be truly amazed at the economic impact the business events industry has in Australia and the world.
I know a lot of people are working hard to illustrate the importance of our industry to government and having great success. But I think maybe we need an all-out assault on the general public to get them to buy into it as well.
Maybe we need an industry ambassador program! Who is up for it? I can make badges for us all.
