Two-act play ‘Purely Academic’ open to both delegates and the public
Conference chair David Abramson, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Queensland, is combining his two fields of expertise, computer science and drama, by hosting his play ‘Purely Academic’ as the main entertainment on the conference program, with an extra performance staged for the public.
Authored by the Professor Abramson and first performed at Oxford University in 2013, the play will be performed in the plenary auditorium, which is being transformed into a playhouse theatre.
The play, which has research integrity at its heart, was a passion project for Professor Abramson, who describes it as 30 years of academic observations, and some literary license, crammed into a one-and-a-half-hour play.
After some peer-assisted editing, plenty of feedback and fine-tuning, it has emerged as an engaging tool for generating discussion on professional academic behaviour, which he strongly believes has appeal to a wider audience.
The five day conference is set to attract 400 delegates from all over Australia, with the play being performed on October 19.
