New laws will see security given the power to ask domestic passengers for ID
Under the new ‘Police Powers at Airports Bill’, authorities will be able to ask passengers to show their ID if they deem them suspicious. The move follows last year’s terror attempt that saw three brothers allegedly tried to smuggle an explosive on a flight from Sydney to Abu Dhabi.
“We have to be realistic about the threat and it’s ridiculous police officers don’t have this ability already,” Dutton told The Courier Mail.
The laws could come into affect across Australian airports as soon as June next year.
