Habourside precinct to be redeveloped and reopened to the public
The 1.8 hectare site in Neutral Bay, North Sydney was once home to a gasworks, later a naval torpedo facility, and then a submarine base known as HMAS Platypus.
This week Sydney Harbour Federation Trust relaunched the precinct as Sub Base Platypus, and is now calling for expressions of interest from commercial tenants to lease and redevelop the site.
The $23.8 million Platypus Renewal Project will transform the space into a public domain suitable for events and exhibitions, complete with visitor accommodation, restaurants and cafes, art spaces and business tenancies.
Parts of the site are expected to be opened to the public from as early as mid 2018.
“Once completed, we will see Sub Base Platypus become a special destination for Sydneysiders and visitors alike, providing a range of facilities and venues for cultural performances, function areas, cafes and restaurants, as well as offices and commercial spaces,” chief executive of the Harbour Trust Mary Darwell told Fairfax Media.
